FOREIGN VISITORS

To the foreign visitors

The Emergency Department of Jikei University Hospital welcomes international students and qualified doctors who have an interest in experiencing the Japanese medical system first hand. Be it for an elective during medical school, a visit for a few weeks during a holiday, or staying for several months after qualifying, we are flexible with regards the time period of your stay, and will not charge a fee.
Although most Japanese patients do not speak fluent English, the Jikei hospital is located in a cosmopolitan area of Tokyo, and many non-Japanese patients come through its doors. Many of the Department staff are English speaking, and as a considerable amount of medical terminology used in Japan stems from English, having no knowledge of Japanese will not hinder you from having an intellectually fulfilling experience.
The hospital is located in central Tokyo, close to major shopping and tourist districts, and highly accessible by public transport. There is excellent accommodation available in the hospital dorms, equipped with kitchen and laundry facilities. For those who would like to see other departments aside from Emergency Medicine, and for more details, please visit the Jikei Elective homepage.

To be able to be part of the Jikei University Hospital family for such a short period of time is truly an unforgettable experience. While the senseis here are extremely helpful and courteous, to be able to experience such a contrast in culture and medical system is absolutely eye-opening and fruitful. What I learned most from my four weeks in Emergency Department is the importance of teamwork. Knowing exactly what your responsibilities are and when and how to do it, is crucial in Emergency Department. As I spent another four weeks in Anesthesiology Department, it was refreshing as it is like working behind the scenes during operative procedures. It is not as simple as I imagined it to be. Despite the busy schedule, I was still able to do some research on the sidelines. It sounds a bit cliché but it is like a dream come true – to receive a foretaste of living as a student in Tokyo is irreplaceable.
